Upper West Side
The Upper West Side is known as Helena’s historic Mansion District. The homes here are classic, rare and ornate. Only separated from the South Central neighborhood by downtown’s charming Park Avenue, all of the options mentioned above apply to the Upper West Side neighborhood as well. Situated at the base of beautiful Mount Helena this area is graced with both gorgeous views and limitless adventure opportunities. The town’s very special and unique Reeder’s Alley is tucked into the neighborhood, as well as the gorgeous residential haven that is Reeder’s Village.

The Upper East Side area of Helena boasts gorgeous and breathtaking views of the entire valley and is conveniently close to several trail heads, including the South Hills Trail System leading to Mount Ascension (learn more on page #32). The gorgeous Montana State Capitol building is a grand feature here as is the Montana Historical Society. Also close by is St. Peter’s Health, many wonderful parks and the South Hills Disc Golf Course. Truly, a gorgeous place to be.

The Lower West Side sits just north of Euclid Avenue (Highway 12) on your way into Helena from the West. This neighborhood offers ample affordable housing options and, because it neighbors Carroll College, there are many rentals available. Centennial trail connects directly to this area and runs all the way from Spring Meadow Lake to Centennial Park. The 2.2 mile trail is fairly flat and easy to access from multiple trail heads. Two city parks sit within this area including Waukesha and Barney Park. There is a friendly, long-standing local grocery store: Van’s Thriftway, which has a great deli and good old-fashioned service. Many businesses are within walking distance all along Euclid Avenue.

The lower East Side neighborhood is in a very central part of Helena. Close to several parks and schools, including Helena College (the local community college) as well as Helena High School, this is a great neighborhood to find affordable housing and raise a family. Many restaurants, grocery stores and businesses are within minutes which help make this friendly neighborhood an extremely convenient option.

Helena’s South Central Neighborhood is home to many iconic mentions: Helena Civic Center, The Cathedral of Saint Helena, Last Chance Gulch and Downtown Walking Mall, and Firetower Park. Since this area is so close to downtown, there are many restaurants, bars, breweries, bakeries, shopping options and even the Farmer’s Market that are all just a short walk away. Great parks, trailheads, schools abound and both the Lewis and Clark County Public Library and Cinemark movie theatre are located within this neighborhood. Most of the homes in this neighborhood are very historical and rich with stories and character. Very cool, unique homes, extreme walkability and endless options to explore right out your back door? The North Central Neighborhood centers around Carroll College, a prestigious private liberal arts college with around 1,500 students. The campus borders Centennial Park, one of Helena’s largest parks complete with a dog park, skate park, and paved trail that is open to biking, roller blading, walking and jogging. What a great thing to have right in the backyard! The Bill Roberts, a 4-Star rated championship golf course also resides in this neighborhood providing a great place to hit the driving range, play a full round, and even cross country ski in the winter. The Northeast Helena Neighborhood is located conveniently close to many shopping destinations like Target, Costco, TJ Maxx, Hobby Lobby which makes running to the store for something a total breeze. Also close by are many great restaurants and several excellent grocery stores like Super 1 and Natural Grocers. There are parks, gyms, and even a really stand out thrift store: “Good Sams” where you are sure to find treasures of all kinds.

The Sunhaven Subdivision is a quiet, charming Helena neighborhood. It’s the type of place you’d want to learn to ride a bike or maybe go trick or treating on Halloween. Very close to one of the two high schools in town, Capital High, this area attracts many families. There are two main parks, Ryan Park and Northgate Park and The Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds and softball field complex are both well within walking distance.
